A personal message from Katrina
Mr. Tarbet will always be remembered as a special friend to NTLS. When I first met him, he was having a very difficult time with his cancer diagnosis and the idea of becoming a laryngectomee. That day in his hospital room, we spent the better part of two hours discussing his options and the concept of life as a laryngectomy. At the end of our visit, he agreed to continue his fight and proceed with his laryngectomy. The degree of trust he placed in me that day was profound and I am reminded of the privilege I have in working with these patients. Since that time, his family and friends have been strong supporters of NTLS. Mr. Tarbet understood the fight he had ahead of him. He fought a long and difficult battle with grace, courage and always a friendly smile. During our most recent NTLS event on May 5th, 2017, he stood as a tribute to all laryngectomees and especially those fighting head & neck cancer. I last saw Mr. Tarbet 6/27/17 for a clinical visit. Through an unspoken understanding, we smiled and hugged. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to say goodbye, but most importantly, I will be forever grateful for the path he crossed in my life.
As you know, all my patients are very special to me in their own way. There is not a single laryngectomee who has not added to my understanding and development. Survivorship is not always an easy road and we always will miss these smiling faces:
